Michigan Auto Insurance Coverage-Know What Your Getting
No matter how many years you have lived in Michigan and how long you have had Michigan auto insurance, it can be very difficult to understand how the coverage works. The key to getting the Michigan car insurance protection you need along with the best rates is to understand Michigan coverage limits. Here is a simple layout of how Michigan auto insurance works.
Bodily Injury Liability
This protects your assets against someone else that you hurt in an auto accident. If they sue you do to pain and suffering that was caused by you being at fault in an accident, then you want to make sure you are adequately covered so that this money isn’t coming out of your pocket. Carrying high liability limits is a wise move as far as we are concerned.
Michigan PIP
Michigan is different from every other state in the sense that we have unlimited medical coverage here. This is an extremely expensive part of our insurance coverage here in Michigan though. The key to getting the best rate on Michigan PIP is to coordinate your health insurance coverage with your auto insurance if you have it through work. You have to call the customer service number for your health insurance and make sure they allow coordinated medical with your auto insurance, but most health insurance carriers do. State provided health insurance such as medicaid and medicare don’t coordinate.
Uninsured and Under insured Liability Coverage
This is similar to Bodily Injury Liability. This on the other hand protects you if you were to get hurt and someone else were to be at fault and either didn’t have enough insurance or didn’t have any at all. You are essentially suing your own insurance company for pain and suffering damages. This shouldn’t be confused with PIP. It isn’t medical coverage, but rather compensation for pain and suffering.
Comprehensive
Comprehensive coverage is there for various non collision related damages such as: hail, theft, vandalism, hit a deer, or other animal, glass breakage, etc..
Collision
As simple as it sounds. This provides protection to your vehicle if your in an accident.
Car Rental Coverage
This actually gets confused with some people. This provides money to rent a car if it is in the shop due to an insurable incident. This is the big thing. It doesn’t provide rental coverage to go on vacation, or if your car is simply broke down.
